D Colour Diamonds
Diamonds that fall within the D colour grade sit at the very peak of the diamond colour scale, meaning that it is entirely colourless and very rare.
D colour diamonds have no warmth or tint present, even under the most controlled of grading conditions. This results in a bright, crisp diamond with an absolutely neutral tone.
Whilst the D colour diamond is the benchmark for the purest colour grade, it also raises an important question- how much of that is visible once the diamond is worn?
What is a D Colour Diamond?
The D colour diamond is the highest grade on the GIA colour scale.
Characteristics:
- Entirely colourless under professional grading
- No detectable colour
- Very rare
Diamonds are assessed in controlled environments, meaning that even the slightest tint of colour in a diamond would immediately lower their grade from a D.
How Does a D Colour Diamond Compare To E, F And G?
Understanding where the D differentiates from lower grades is essential.
Practically:
- D vs E = practically identical
- D vs F = very small difference
- D vs G = slight warmth becomes visible in comparison
While the D grade diamond represents the highest standard on the colour grading scale, the visual differences presented between the D, E or F is often very minimal when viewed in your day to day life.

When Does D Colour Make Sense?
Clients who prioritise D colour diamonds are typically those who prioritise:
- The highest possible grading available
- Definite colourlessness
- Desire the most rare
Particularly suited to:
- Step-cut diamonds (emerald, Asscher), where colour is more obvious and visible
- Designs where the diamond is the central focus
How the D Colour Diamond Performs In A Setting
Once a diamond is set, the difference between the D colour and its lower colourless grades becomes increasingly subtle.
D colour diamonds are best in:
- White Gold and Platinum settings, where neutrality is preserved
- Designs that allow light to pass through the diamond cleanly
- Step cuts, where colour is more visible
In many finished jewellery pieces, the visual difference between D and E or F remains very minimal.

MDT DESIGN Perspective
At MDT DESIGN, we recognise the significance of having a D colour Diamond -but we also consider the bigger picture and how a diamond will be experienced once worn.
While D represents the highest colour grade on paper, the most meaningful choice is not always the highest specification, but what is the best choice for you when looking for the most balanced result.
Our MDT DESIGN Melbourne Jewellers approach focuses on:
- how the diamond appears in the finished piece
- how it interacts with the setting and metal
- how it will be worn throughout the years
As each and every ring is custom designed and handmade in our Melbourne workshop, we take the time necessary to guide our clients toward decisions that feel considered, not excessive.
