Founded in 1981 by master jeweller and diamond grader Nicholas Theochari, the business has grown into a proud family-run studio where creativity, precision, and passion are shared across generations. Every piece is made with care by people who truly love what they do, continuing the legacy of Melbourne-made, handmade jewellery excellence that MDT DESSIGN is known for.
Nicholas Theochari
Founder & Director
The founder and creative force behind MDT DESIGN, Nicholas has spent more than four decades refining the art of handmade fine jewellery. His journey began with a fascination for craftsmanship and design, leading him to establish MDT DESIGN in Melbourne in 1981. Since then, Nicholas has devoted his life to creating timeless and modern engagement rings, wedding rings and jewellery pieces that embody the highest standards of artistry and innovation.
Throughout his career, Nicholas has designed and handmade countless award-winning pieces, earning over six national jewellery awards and more than ten finalist positions since 1997. His leadership and eye for detail continue to guide the MDT DESIGN team, setting the benchmark for excellence in every piece produced.
Nicholas’s meticulous eye and hands-on approach ensure that every creation leaving their Melbourne studio meets the quality and precision MDT DESIGN is celebrated for. His leadership has guided the brand to numerous industry awards, while his mentorship continues to inspire the next generation of jewellers, including his own children, who now play key roles in the business.
Nicholas remains deeply involved in the design and production process, mentoring his team and ensuring that every creation reflects the values that have defined MDT DESIGN from the beginning, craftsmanship, innovation, and authenticity.
Kosta Theochari
Managing Director & Co-Owner
Having grown up surrounded by the tools and creativity of the workshop, Kosta has been part of MDT DESIGN since childhood. He officially began his apprenticeship at the end of 2003, completing a practical diamond grading course and earning four finalist positions in national jewellery awards.
In 2019, Kosta became co-owner and managing director, working alongside his father to continue MDT DESIGN’s reputation for excellence. A qualified jeweller with years of hands-on experience, Kosta assists clients in designing bespoke pieces, grades diamonds and gemstones for valuations, and advises both clients and team members on design aesthetics, remodeling and on jewellery repairs and design solutions. His deep technical knowledge ensures each piece is well-balanced, durable, and beautifully executed.
Beyond the bench, Kosta oversees much of MDT DESIGN’s website and digital upkeep, writes for the Journal, and mentors the workshop team, helping train apprentices and refine techniques that uphold the studio’s handmade traditions.
Outside of work, Kosta is a proud father to a young son who already shares his love for jewellery. At just four years old, he enjoys visiting the boutique to “help” his dad, granddad, aunty, and uncle, hammering away (under close supervision, of course) and exploring the workshop where the family legacy continues to grow. I also have a young daughter, only old enough to enjoy the sparkles of diamonds.

Steven Theochari
Media & Marketing Manager
Since joining MDT DESIGN in 2010, Steven has been the driving force behind the brand’s digital growth and creative communication. He manages MDT DESIGN’s online presence, including social media, journal posts, website updates, and digital advertising, ensuring the brand’s craftsmanship and story are shared with audiences both locally and internationally.
Steven also oversees all photography and visual presentation of MDT DESIGN’s creations, capturing the intricate detail, balance, and artistry of each handmade piece for the website and marketing materials. His creative direction ensures the brand’s visual identity remains consistent, refined, and true to the MDT DESIGN aesthetic.
Beyond the studio, Steven is a talented singer and visual artist, performing and releasing original music under the name Stevie Bankster. His artwork and songs intertwine, each piece complementing the other with creativity and emotion, a reflection of the same artistry he brings to MDT DESIGN’s brand storytelling.
Ellen Theochari
Administration & Operations
Ellen joined MDT DESIGN in 2019 and quickly became an integral part of the team. She oversees essential administrative work, jewellery valuations, coordinates regular stocktakes, and ensures the smooth running of day-to-day studio operations. Her strong organisational skills and attention to detail keep the business running efficiently behind the scenes.
Outside of the workshop, Ellen is a talented freelance makeup artist with a passion for design, symmetry, and fashion, qualities that naturally align with MDT DESIGN’s emphasis on artistry and aesthetics. Her creative flair, professionalism, and love for visual beauty make her an invaluable part of the family business.
