Designed and Handmade by MDT DESIGN

Every engagement ring MDT DESIGN creates is handmade on-site in our Collins Street Melbourne workshop by our experienced jewellers.

Rather than cutting corners by casting rings from pre-made moulds, we individually roll, forge, file, shape and assemble each piece using traditional jewellery making techniques.

This process work-hardens the precious metal used, producing a stronger ring with superior durability and finer attention to detail than one that is mass produced.

Handmaking also allows us to make adjustments while the piece is being made, resulting in a beautifully balanced ring with crisp settings, refined proportions and exceptional finish.

Our Design Process

Creating your engagement ring is an enjoyable and collaborative experience.

During your consultation, we will discuss your ideas, determine your preferred styles, present you with options you may not have considered or knew were available, assess gemstones and budget before developing a design tailored specifically to you.

We will guide you through the entire process and give the positives and negatives of each element helping you choose:

• Diamond shape and size
• Metal selection
• Setting style
• Ring proportions
• Practical considerations for everyday wear
• Matching wedding band options

Once the design has been finalised, your engagement ring is individually handmade in our Melbourne workshop, typically taking around 4–6 weeks to complete.

Many of our clients arrive with inspiration they’ve collected on-line from Pinterest, Instagram or rings they’ve seen in person. But often, they only love certain elements of designs, and their ideal ring comprises elements from several different rings. These clients need one design that brings everything they want together. Others have inherited a family diamond or gemstone and want to create a modern ring designed around it.

Designing your own engagement ring will allow you to choose every detail, from the stones featured, the overall look and style all the way through to the smallest touches like finished and side profiles. This also means your budget can be allocated where it matters most to you. Whether that’s putting more of you budget towards a larger diamond, choosing for it tio be made in platinum over white gold, or incorporating coloured gemstones, every decision is yours.

Because every ring is individually handmade, we can also make adjustments throughout the design process to ensure the finished piece has the right proportions, comfort and balance.

Step 1 – The Design Walk Through (Free Consultation)

Whether you’re bursting with ideas or have absolutely no clue where to start, we begin with a relaxed and informative design walkthrough.

During this session, your designer will:

• Show you different styles, settings, and design approaches
• Educate you on what’s possible in modern and traditional jewellery design
• Help you identify what you naturally gravitate towards
• Demonstrate how different stones, shapes, metals, and details change the overall look

Our designers are experts at helping you clarify your vision – even when you don’t have one yet.

You’ll leave this stage understanding the options, the terminology, and what resonates most with you.

Step 2 – Visualising Your Custom Design

Once we understand your preferences, we begin creating visual representations right in front of you using:

• Existing rings
• Sample settings
• Loose diamonds and gemstones
• Metal profiles
• Hand examples
• Physical elements from our workshop

Step 3 – Choosing Your Diamond or Gemstone

Whether you’re designing a custom engagement ring or another custom jewellery piece, selecting your stone is a major part of the journey.

At MDT DESIGN you can:

✔ Ask us to source specific stones based on your preferences and budget
✔ Repurpose diamonds or gemstones from existing jewellery you own

Step 4 – Approving Your Final Design & Quote

Once your design is refined, we provide a quote.
There are no hidden fees, and all consultations are free.

If you’re interstate or international, we happily complete each stage via email, phone, or virtual consultation. We’re known for maintaining excellent communication with remote clients.

Step 5 – Handmade Creation in Our Melbourne Workshop

Step 6 – Completion, Collection & Lifetime Care

Our standard timeframe is approximately 4 weeks, depending on workshop load.
If you have a specific deadline, we will always try our hardest to accommodate your needs.

Once your piece is ready, you’ll pick it up from our Collins Street boutique – and your custom creation is now supported by our lifetime servicing.

Can I Use My Own Diamond or Gemstone?

Absolutely. Many of our clients already own a diamond ring or coloured gemstone piece that has sentimental value. The piece of jewellery may have been inherited from a family member, come from an older piece of jewellery, or purchased elsewhere.

Before beginning the remake design process, we would carefully inspect your diamond or gemstone you are thinking to use to ensure it is suitable for the new design. We can then discuss the best setting to both showcase and protect it. We can also redesign existing engagement rings by reusing your diamonds and precious metals wherever possible, creating a completely new piece while preserving its sentimental value and meaning.
