Handmade vs Cast Jewellery: Why the Difference Matters

When people first begin looking for a high quality piece of jewellery or engagement ring, often they first compare styles, gemstones and pricing.

What many people do not realise is that one of the most important differences in jewellery can be in how the piece is actually made. The way your jewellery is created should be at the forefront of the conversation.

At a quick glance, two rings may look similar or to be the exact same. But the truth is, that structurally they can be worlds apart.

The difference between handmade jewellery and cast jewellery affects the strength, durability and longevity of the piece. For jewellery that is worn every day and expected to last for generations- like wedding bands and engagement rings, this difference matters even more.

At MDT DESIGN, every piece is made entirely by hand in our on-site Melbourne jewellery workshop. We do not cast and we do not mass produce our jewellery.

We choose to honour time tested and true handmade jewellery techniques to create sentimental jewellery pieces that are durable and made to stand the test of time. When creating your piece by hand, we begin with solid bar of gold or platinum and create each piece individually. We make and design jewellery with greater integrity, durability and meaning than those created on a mass scale.

What Is Cast Jewellery?

Cast jewellery is made by pouring molten metal into a pre-made mould to create the shape of the piece. It allows the same design to be reproduced over and over again, often with very little variation. Modifications that need to be made are done so in a CAD (Computer Aided Design) program, the piece is then 3D printed in Wax and then used to create the mould for the new piece.

This process is perfect for cutting the costs associated with jewellery manufacturing as it is a quick, repeatable and suited to large scale production. A great way to cut back on a jeweller’s time, metal used and essentially reduce the costing, but in turn these shortcuts reduce the quality of the final piece.

Casting has become common across the jewellery industry because it is fast + easy (not words often associated with quality or durability).

Efficiency and craftsmanship are not the same thing.

The cast jewellery process prioritises a lower costing over a quality piece. It is designed for quick production and for businesses focused on volume, as a mass produced ring of this nature can be made in under 30 minutes, whereas a handmade ring can take anywhere from 6 hours+.

For those looking for an individually designed personal piece of jewellery that will stand the test of time, mass production manufacturing always fall short.

What Is Handmade Jewellery?

Handmade jewellery is the traditional way jewellery was first created. It took skill, time and patience to create and was essentially a one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery.

Every component of the ring begins as a bar of solid metal, the bar is rolled, beaten and forged to individually create each component needed to create the piece desired. Each component of the design is then hand assembled, the diamonds are handset and the ring is hand polished.

Creating a ring through compressing, forging, shaping and assembling solid precious metal by hand creates a work hardened piece that will last a lifetime.

This is not a decorative or aesthetic difference. It is a completely different method of making jewellery- when compared to casting- the handmaking process tightens the molecular structure of the metal.

How Handmade Jewellery Begins

Rather than pouring metal into a mould, all handmade jewellery starts with solid bar of precious metal that is cut, forged, shaped and manipulated into the final design.

This means each part of the ring is intentionally made to house the specific stone being featured and the finger size needed.

It also means the jeweller has more control over the final appearance of the design in terms of proportion, balance and scale as these can be individually modified and engendered to be perfect.

Why Forged Metal Matters

FORGE: to make or shape a metal object by heating it in a fire or furnace and hammering it.

As the metal is worked by hand, it is compressed and becomes work hardened and strengthened.

This is one of the most important reasons handmade jewellery is so highly valued. The process does not simply just create a shape, it creates a structure.

We believe jewellery should last a lifetime and we give our pieces the best chance of doing that by handmaking them.

This way we are able to back our jewellery by offering a manufacturers warranty for the life of all MDT DESIGN jewellery.

Handmade vs Cast Jewellery: The Key Differences

Strength and durability

This is the biggest difference in a handmade piece.

Handmade jewellery made from forged and hardened gold or platinum is far stronger than a cast jewellery piece that has been poured into a mould and left to cool.

This matters enormously in rings that are worn daily like engagement rings and wedding bands.

A ring should not only look beautiful on the day it is collected, it should be made with structural integrity to withstand decades of wear.

Weight and density

Handmade jewellery often feels heavier in the hand.

As the metal is worked and forged and metal is compressed rather than cast, the finished piece is denser and heavier. That added substance contributes not only to durability, but the overall feeling of the jewellery piece.

Clients may not always know the technical reason immediately, but they often feel a notable difference.

Design freedom

Casting is ideal for temporary and repetitive designs. Handmade jewellery is ideal for individuality and intention.

At MDT DESIGN, working by hand allows much greater design freedom. Custom made rings and jewellery can be created for the specific wearer, the proportions of a chosen stone, lifestyle requirements, structural priorities and style preferences.

This is particularly important for clients who want jewellery that feels personal to them rather than something off a production line.

Authenticity and craftsmanship

There is also a human difference.

Handmade jewellery carries the mark of craft. It reflects the skill, judgement and care of the jeweller who made it. It is not anonymous manufacturing. It is a piece created fully by hand by a single person with intention. It is made to match a person’s story and mark milestones.

In a world that aims to cut costs (and corners) this type of authenticity is becoming increasingly rare.

Why This Matters for Engagement Rings and Everyday Jewellery

The method of handmaking matters even more when the jewellery carries emotional significance in marking milestones in someone’s journey through life.

An engagement ring is not a fashion accessory; it is something that is generally worn every day. The same is true of wedding rings and many sentimental jewellery pieces.

For jewellery that represents a relationship, a commitment or a family milestone, durability and structural integrity matters.

This is why so many clients are looking for a custom engagement rings in Melbourne and have begun increasingly asking deeper questions about manufacture and craftsmanship, not just look and style.

Why Melbourne Clients Are Choosing Handmade Jewellery
