How Are Diamonds Formed?

The Natural Journey of a Diamond

Diamonds are among the earth’s most extraordinary creations – rare, beautiful, and billions of years in the making. Understanding how diamonds are formed not only deepens their fascination but also highlights why they hold enduring value as symbols of love and commitment.

At MDT DESIGN, we specialise in natural, ethically sourced diamonds, each with its own remarkable story of formation.

Diamonds: Created Deep Beneath the Earth

  • Extreme pressure and heat: Natural diamonds are formed around 150–200 kilometres below the earth’s surface, where carbon is subjected to intense pressure and temperatures exceeding 1,000°C.
  • Billions of years: Most diamonds are between 1–3.5 billion years old, making them some of the oldest natural materials on earth.
  • Volcanic eruptions: Diamonds are brought closer to the surface through volcanic pipes of kimberlite and lamproite, where they can eventually be mined.

What Makes Diamonds Unique?

Every diamond is a natural crystal of carbon, but each one is unique because of:

  • Time of formation – no two diamonds share the same geological journey.
  • Trace elements and inclusions – nature leaves its fingerprint in each stone.
  • Crystal structure – perfect atomic arrangement gives diamonds their unrivalled hardness (the hardest known natural substance).

This natural uniqueness is what gives diamonds their individual character and makes each stone one-of-a-kind.

Natural vs Lab-Grown Formation

  • Natural diamonds: Formed naturally over billions of years within the earth’s mantle. Rare, finite, and deeply symbolic.
  • Lab-grown diamonds: Created in months using high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapour deposition (CVD) methods. While chemically similar, they lack the ancient natural journey that makes natural diamonds unique.

At MDT DESIGN, we believe it is vital to understand the difference – as the choice between natural and lab-grown diamonds is one that lasts a lifetime.

Why Understanding Diamond Formation Matters

Knowing how diamonds are formed highlights their rarity, value, and symbolism. Unlike many gemstones, diamonds cannot simply be created in abundance by nature; they are the product of time, pressure, and unique conditions that make them truly precious.

This is why MDT DESIGN only works with carefully selected, individually inspected natural diamonds – chosen for their brilliance, integrity, and value.
