Can an Old Diamond Really Be Put Into a New Ring?
In most cases, yes!
The age of the gemstone does not prevent it from being reset. What matters first and foremost is the condition of the stone, we then consider the proportions, shape and most importantly its suitability for the new design.
An inherited diamond might have spent decades in a single piece of jewellery, during this time its setting can wear, the claws can weaken allowing the stone itself to acquire chips, abrasions or wear that isn’t immediately obvious to the naked eye.
This does not mean that the diamond cannot be reused, it simply means that it should undergo an assessment before a new engagement ring is designed around it.
At MDT DESIGN it isn’t simply a question of ‘Can it be set?’
It is more importantly a question of ‘How should we set it so that it can continue to be worn safely for decades to come?’
What Happens When You Bring a Family Diamond to MDT DESIGN?
Firstly, before be begin designing a brand new engagement ring, we first assess the diamond or gemstone that you have. This first step is imperative in determining whether we can in fact work with this stone at all.
Each and every heirloom is different, so the assessment process can often vary depending on the gemstone and the piece itself.
The team will (in most cases) clean the existing piece of jewellery in our ultrasonic cleaner- removing any dirt of grime from the piece and allowing us to examine and asses the stone more clearly. We will then proceed to carefully inspect it under magnification, we consider its condition, shape and proportions as well as existing wear- all factors are taken into account when considering a new design.
In most cases we can determine whether a diamond or gemstone can be reused while it is still in its original setting, however we do asses this on a case to case basis, whilst communicating the process at every step to keep our client in the loop.
If we decided the stone is suitable, we can then proceed with the designing process, designing the new engagement ring around the speficications of this particular stone.
It is very important to us not to force an inherited diamond into a design, we take into account longevity, security and structure and we design the new ring with foresight keeping this specific diamond in mind.
As we are jewellers, that distinction matters most.
What If I Don’t Know Anything About My Family Diamond?
It is very common that our client doesn’t know anything about their family diamond.
You might know who it belonged to but not the details of its carat weight, colour, clarity, age or if paperwork for this stone exists.
That is where we come in. We urge you to bring your family heirloom piece in for inspection regardless, as we can often inform you about what you are working with, with no obligation to proceed.
We encourage you to bring any existing valuations, receipts, grading reports or documentation in with you in the cases that it does exist, however this is not entirely necessary for us to asses and educate you about what we are working with.
Our team can still examine the jewellery and discuss what you have, its apparent condition and what possibilities may exist for incorporating the stone into a new engagement ring.
It is certainly worth understanding that a definitive laboratory diamond grading report generally requires the diamond to be loose. A setting can obscure parts of a stone and affect the ability to accurately determine characteristics such as colour, clarity and exact carat weight.
That doesn’t mean the diamond needs to be removed simply to have an initial conversation about remodelling it.
In most cases, we can tell you what is possible before we take anything apart.
Do I Have to Keep the Original Engagement Ring Design?
Absolutely not.
Wanting to use a family diamond does not mean you have to recreate the family ring.
As we individually handmake all of our pieces, custom design is definitely an option.
Inherited jewellery
Each facet of the design can be customised, wether that be changing a yellow gold ring into a platinum design, using the stone as a part of a new trilogy engagement ring or using several smaller family diamonds to adorn the shoulders of the new piece. The options are limitless.
The original jewellery provides the history.
It doesn’t have to dictate the aesthetic.

Can I Make a Modern Engagement Ring With an Old-Cut Diamond?
You can, and the result can be extraordinary.
Often inherited jewellery can contain older diamond cuts- such as; old mine cuts, old European cuts and early brilliant cuts.
While these diamonds can often look noticeably different from modern cut stones, their proportions, facet patters and individual character reflect the era in which they came from.
Rather than trying to force an old diamond to behave like a new one, we believe the design choices should be informed and made with the knowledge that the stone before us provides.
At times an antique diamond can look remarkable contrasted against a clean, contemporary setting. Other circumstances, its proportions, edges or existing condition may dictate greater consideration or protection when used in a new design.
This is another important reason the properly asses the stone first.
A family diamond or irreplacable sentiment deserves a ring designed especially for it, not a standard setting that it just so happens to fit into.
Can I Reuse the Original Gold as Well as the Diamond?
Potentially.
For some families, the precious metal can be just as sentimental as the stone itself.
Where appropriate, existing diamonds, gemstones and precious metals can potentially be incorporated into a new piece through jewellery remodelling.
We asses the original gold or platinum to see whether it is suitable for reuse. Reuse factors such as its condition, composition, quantity and the requirements of the new design are all things that we take into consideration.
Older jewellery might have been repaired, soldered or altered throughout its life, which can also influence what we recommend in regards to incorporating it into the new design.
This is the reason we can’t promise the ability to reuse your precous metal until we have actually seen the piece.
Sometimes the original metal can become part of the new ring. Other times, there might be a more appropriate way of incorporating its sentiment without relying upon it for the structural integrity of the new piece. In cases where the metal cannot be used, our clients have the option to trade in that metal to offset its cost on their new piece, or hold on to it themselves for future use.
Can I Add New Diamonds or Gemstones to a Family Diamond?
Yes of course!
We often use the inherited diamond as a starting point.
Depending on the engagement ring design you desire, you can choose to introduce new design elements- such as side diamonds, a diamond halo, accent diamonds or even adding sapphires or other coloured gemstones.
When working with MDT DESIGN the sky is the limit when it comes to the custom engagement ring design of your dreams.
In some cases diamonds or gemstones from other pieces of family jewellery may also be considered for incorporation into the new design.
This can be very meaningful when jewellery has been inherited from different people or different generations of a family.
But importantly our objective is not to simply fit as many sentimental elements as possible into one ring.
The goal is to create one engagement ring design where it makes sense for every element to be there.
Is It Cheaper to Use a Family Diamond?
It can be.
If you already own the diamond that will become the centre stone of your engagement ring, you don’t need to purchase that diamond again. Depending on its size and quality, that can represent a significant component of the overall cost of an engagement ring.
However, using an inherited diamond shouldn’t automatically be considered the “cheap” way to create an engagement ring.
The cost of creating the new piece will depend on the design, precious metal, complexity, additional diamonds or gemstones and the work required to handmake it.
With a family diamond, you’re essentially bringing the centrepiece of the new engagement ring to the design process yourself.
And unlike choosing a new diamond based purely on specifications, an inherited diamond brings something that cannot be purchased:
A ring with an origin and a story that belongs specifically to your family.
Should I Reset the Diamond or Keep the Original Ring?
There is no one correct answer to this question.
Often it is a personal choice.
In some cases an inherited ring is beautifully made, structurally sound and the design is loved exactly as it is.
In this circumstace the option of preservation or repair might be more appropriate than completely remodelling it.
Depending on the heirloom its-self, options such as servicing, resizing, restoring worn areas or repairing claws may allow the existing piece to continue being worn while retaining its original design.
An entire remodel makes more sense when:
- you dont love the design but you love the diamond
- the existing design doesn’t suit the person who will wear it
- the original structure of the setting is significantly worn
- the ring is not worn because of fear of damage
- wanting the family diamond to become the centre of an entirely new engagement ring design

The process begins with a consultation at our Collins Street Melbourne boutique.
Bring the ring or jewellery containing your family diamond, along with any valuations, grading reports or other documentation you may have.
If you don’t have paperwork, that’s okay.
And you certainly don’t need to arrive knowing exactly what you want the finished engagement ring to look like.
2. We Assess What You Have
Our team will generally clean the piece before one of our jewellers examines the diamond or gemstone carefully under magnification.
In most cases, this initial assessment can be performed while the stone remains safely within its existing setting.
We’ll discuss its condition, whether it appears suitable for reuse and whether anything about the stone or original jewellery needs to influence the new design.
Every piece is different, so the process may vary depending on what you bring us.
And if we believe something shouldn’t be reused in the way you originally imagined, we’ll tell you.

3. We Design Around Your Diamond
Once we understand the stone we’re working with, the design process begins around that specific diamond.
Its shape. Its dimensions. Its proportions. Its character. And how it needs to be protected for long-term wear.
From there, we can explore different settings, precious metals, proportions and design directions with you.
The finished ring might pay homage to the original piece or look completely different.
That’s the beauty of custom design.

Frequently Asked Questions About Family Diamond Engagement Rings
Can I use my grandmother’s diamond in my engagement ring?

Do you have to remove my diamond to see if it can be reused?

Can a jeweller put my diamond into a new setting?

Can an inherited diamond be damaged when it is reset?

Can I use an inherited diamond without a certificate?
