E Colour Diamonds

Diamonds of an E colour grading sit just below D, yet they remain well within the “colourless” category.

To the naked eye they appear bright and entirely free from warm hues- often indistinguishable without direct comparison, under controlled conditions.

We recommend the E colour for those who are seeking exceptional visual purity, without having to default to the top of the scale.

What is an E Colour Diamond?

An E colour diamond is graded as colourless by the GIA, this means that it contains no visible tint when assessed in professional grading conditions.

Characteristics:

  • Appearing completely white when in natural lighting
  • No warmth detectable to the naked eye
  • A grade below D on the colour scale

Whilst an E coloured Diamond is not technically the highest grade, the differences between E and D when assessing colour grade is extremely subtle and rarely visible once the diamond is set into a piece of jewellery.

How Do E Diamond Colour Grade Compare To D, F And G?

It is important to understand how the E sits within the diamond colour grading scale, this helps to understand the role of the E diamond.

In practical terms:

  • E vs D → almost impossible to distinguish
  • E vs F → very subtle differences
  • E vs G → start detecting very slight warmth in certain conditions

For most clients, once comparing side by side- the E colour options offer the same result as D, without the need to select the highest colour grade.

Why Choose E Colour?

Clients who select an E colour diamond, often want the assurance of a colourless diamond without the cost of the highest colour grade- allowing budget flexibility in the overall design considerations.

They offer:

  • A colourless appearance
  • Very little visual difference from D
  • Ability to balance across size, cut, and setting

Rather than focusing solely on the highest grade, E colour allows for a more considered distribution of priorities within the ring.

How E Colour Performs In A Setting

Once set into jewellery, the difference between an E and a D coloured diamond becomes even more subtle.

E colour diamonds often perform best in:

  • Platinum or white gold settings, emphasising brightness
  • Brilliant cut diamonds, allows more light into the stone

In most completed jewellery pieces, an E colour diamond will appear identical to a D colour diamond.

The MDT DESIGN Perspective

We at MDT DESIGN approach diamond selection through with the finished piece in mind- not only the grading report.

E colour diamonds are usually where technical specs and real-life appearance align closely.

Allowing us to:

  • Achieve a colourless appearing diamond
  • Keep flexibility over design and budget
  • Focus on the overall balance of the ring

We design and create custom handmade jewellery in our Melbourne workshop, where we refine every element with the whole piece in mind- ensuring the final result feels intentional, forever.

Compare Diamond Colour Grades

Choosing between diamond colour grades often comes down to subtle differences that are difficult to detect without direct comparison.
