G Colour Diamonds

Diamonds that fall into the ‘G’ grade are at the top of the ‘near colourless’ category. G colour diamonds are often considered one of the most balanced choices for engagement rings.

In real life conditions, on the hand- G colour diamonds appear bright and white, especially when set into a piece. This is the lowest colour grade we will recommend to our clients, as we want all of our clients to have eye clean and colourless diamonds.

At MDT DESIGN we take the time necessary to provide our clients with a detailed education on the 4 C’s of diamonds. We want you to understand what it is that you are looking at and have enough knowledge to select the perfect diamond for you, with our guidance of course.

It is important to consider and compare your G colour diamond with its close neighbours in order to gain a full understanding of how exactly they differ and how you value their difference, as everyone has different requirements.

When looking at colour grades it is important to see the bigger picture and understand all options available, as often there a very minor differences between letter grades that cannot always be detected unless you are viewing them as loose diamonds.

What is a G Colour Diamond?

A G colour diamond is considered ‘near colourless’ on the GIA diamond grading scale.

Characteristics:

  • appears white in most conditions
  • does contain a faint warmth under comparison
  • just below the colourless (D–F) range

While a G colour diamond is technically not colourless, the difference is often hard to detect, especially once the diamond is set into a piece and worn.

How Does G Compare to F, E and D ?

Understanding where G fits into the scale is essential, especially when comparing it to higher grades.

In functional terms:

  • G vs F – minimal difference when set into a piece of jewellery
  • G vs E – difficult to distinguish without side by side comparison
  • G vs D – differences noticeable under grading conditions

For most, the noticeable difference between G and higher grades is less than expected.

Why G Colour Diamonds are the Most Popular Choice for Engagement Rings

G colour diamonds offer a balance between appearance and cost, making them a very popular choice for engagement rings.

Characteristics:

  • A bright, white appearance in everyday life
  • Flexibility in other areas of the 4 C’s like size or cut
  • A balanced allocation of budget

Once armed with the education necessary, most clients would rather reserve their budget for more noticeable elements of your diamond.

How G Colour Diamonds Perform in a Setting

Once a diamond finds its home in a piece of jewellery, its perceived colour is influenced by its environment.

G colour diamonds perform well in:

  • Yellow gold settings – where warmth is naturally complemented and you cannot tell the warmth comes from the stone.
  • Brilliant cut diamonds – which reflect light and minimise colour visibility
  • Designs where overall budget is reserved for more visible elements

In most circumstances a G colour diamond will appear just as white as the colour grades above it when viewed in day to day life.

The MDT DESIGN Perspective

At MDT DESIGN, we support our clients by guiding them toward decisions that make sense in real life, not only on paper.

This is our philosophy with all facets of jewellery- providing you with the knowledge necessary to make the perfect decision for you.

The G colour diamond grade is often where we see this balance becoming more apparent.

As a G colour Diamond provides a bright appearance and a strong foundation to a well considered ring.

As each and every piece of jewellery is custom designed and handmade in our Melbourne workshop, we are able to refine the entire ring around the diamond, or vice versa- ensuring the design feels cohesive, intentional and built to last lifetimes.
