Jewellery, Fathers & the Pieces We Pass Down: An Heirloom Doesn’t Begin When It’s Inherited

Father’s Day jewellery, men’s rings, restoring Dad’s old ring and the meaning behind the pieces men keep for a lifetime.

Something interesting lives between the concept of men and jewellery.

Compared to women lot of men may only own a handful of pieces throughout their life, yet the jewellery pieces they do choose to wear become almost inseperable from them.

Whether that be a wedding ring that has been on Dads hand for more than thirty years, a signet ring that is smooth around its edges from being worn, a gold chain that he never takes off, a watch saved only for special occasions or a ring purchased to mark a milestone that decades later has accumulated profound meaning, beyond what was intended upon purchase.

Eventually these few pieces of mens jewellery can become part of how we remember someone.

At MDT DESIGN, Father’s Day naturally has us pondering about the jewellery we give our fathers.

But as a family-owned Melbourne jeweller, it also makes us think about something bigger: the pieces our fathers give us, the things they teach us to value, and what we might eventually pass on ourselves.

Because an heirloom piece doesn’t just begin when it is inherited.

It begins while it is being worn.

Jewellery for Dad: Made to Mean Something

Choosing jewellery as a Father’s Day gift can feel a little extra difficult than buying jewellery for any other occasions.

Perhaps that is because the best men’s jewellery feels more intentional rather than decorative.

The best mens jewellery pieces become a part of the person wearing it.

A perfectly custom made signet ring can become an everyday signature. An individually handmade gold or platinum ring can mark an important milestone. A diamond ring can become something stylish and distinctive. A gold chain or bracelet can become a piece that is put on once and never removed again.

There are so many reasons that consitute gifting a man jewellery. Father’s Day might mean something different to everyone. It could commemorate becoming a father for the first time. A special ring could represent children or family – represented through more sentimental stylistic choices like engraving, diamonds or gemstones.

An existing piece of jewellery could be redesigned to mark a new chapter. Or it could even be as simple as an opportunity to give Dad something of quality that he would never think to treat himself.

At MDT DESIGN, our handmade men’s jewellery collection ranges from refined classic rings and wedding bands to diamond designs, Mokume Gane, chains, bracelets and completely custom pieces.

Each and every piece that we create is individually handmade in our Melbourne workshop.

The question we believe matters most isn’t just “What should I buy Dad?”

It is moreso:

What would he actually want to keep?

Men’s Rings That Are Made to Be Worn

A mens ring is well suited to becoming an heirloom because of the life it experiences with its owner.

It goes to work with them, it travels, it is present through every moment of their lives.

It faces knocks, scrathes and it is loved and worn.

At some point, each little mark, or scratch that appear on it becomes evidence of a life lived whilst wearing it.

For some men, a simple handmade gold or platinum band is enough.

Others are attracted to signet rings, diamonds or unusual finishes; even mixed metals or designs with far more presence.

There is no single definition of what a men’s ring should look like.

And that is particularly true when the piece is individually designed.

A custom men’s ring can incorporate a meaningful date, engraving, family gemstone, birthstone or existing piece of jewellery. It can be restrained or unconventional. The important part is creating something appropriate for the person who will actually wear it.

That is where handmade jewellery becomes particularly personal.

The jewellery should adapt to the person – not the other way around.

When His Ring Becomes Yours

Father’s Day can also often carry a very different meaning for families whose fathers are no longer with us.

And often, the most important piece of men’s jewellery you will ever own isn’t something you buy.

It is something you inherit.

We regularly meet clients at our Collins Street jewellery workshop carrying small boxes containing pieces that may not have been opened for years.

A grandfather’s signet.

An old gold ring.

A diamond or gemstone.

A chain tucked away after somebody passed.

Financially, the piece might be worth a little or a lot. Emotionally, that distinction can become almost irrelevant.

When inherited jewellery comes into our workshop, we aren’t simply assessing precious metal and gemstones. We are being entrusted with memory.

It is something we take particularly seriously as a family business.

And one of the first questions people understandably ask us is:

Can My Father’s Old Ring Be Restored?

In most cases, yes, it can.

But most importantly before wearing an inherited ring regularly, particularly one that has already experienced decades of wear, it is important to have its structural condition professionally assessed.

An old ring may appear perfectly fine while hiding worn claws, thinning metal, weakened joins or loose gemstones.

Professional ring restoration can involve rebuilding worn claws or settings, adding metal, replacing or reinforcing a worn band, tightening stones, repairing joins, refinishing the surface or even replacing missing stones.

Where a ring has deteriorated beyond what can sensibly be repaired, a complete remake using the original gemstones and sentimental metal may sometimes be the better long-term option.

The objective isn’t to make Dad’s old ring look brand new for the sake of it.

It is to understand what needs to be done so that it can safely continue to be worn and enjoyed.

Restore, Remake or Preserve?

This is a very important decisions when dealing with jewellery you have inherited – and there isn’t one sole correct answer.

Sometimes the wear and scratches on a father’s ring are precisely what make it meaningful.

Sometimes preserving as much as possible of its history is the right thing to do.

Sometimes it is not the best choice, or it is not possible at all.

Preserve it

If the jewellery remains structurally sound and its original state holds significant sentimental value, very little may need to change.

A professional inspection by a jeweller and clean may be all that is required.

There can be such beauty in letting an old piece to remain old.

Restore it

If the original design matters but years of wear have compromised its strength and integrity, jewellery restoration can preserve its character while addressing structural problems.

At MDT DESIGN, restoration can include re-tipping claws, rebuilding settings, re-shanking worn rings, tightening diamonds and gemstones, repairing joins and refinishing jewellery. All restoration work is completed in our Melbourne workshop rather than being outsourced and each jewellery piece presented to us, we view with a personal and individual approach.

Remake it

Then there are pieces that mean everything emotionally – but simply aren’t something the next generation will ever wear.

A father’s heavy gold wedding ring may not suit his daughter’s hand. An inherited men’s ring may be entirely the wrong size or the style doesn’t match. Or in some cases several sentimental family pieces may be sitting separately in a drawer.

This is where jewellery remodelling becomes quite meaningful.

Depending on the condition of the materials, existing diamonds, gemstones and precious metals can potentially become part of an entirely new design.

The MDT DESIGN remodelling process is specifically intended to preserve the sentiment of inherited or unworn jewellery while creating something specifically for the person who will wear it next.

The result doesn’t always need to look like Dad’s ring to carry Dad’s story.

Sometimes the components of the jewellery itself is the connection.

Can You Resize an Inherited Men’s Ring?

Often, yes.

An inherited ring being the wrong size doesn’t necessarily mean it cannot be worn.

Whether resizing is appropriate depends on the ring’s construction, metal, design, settings and existing condition. Older pieces should first be inspected for structural wear, because changing the size of an already weakened ring may require additional restoration.

MDT DESIGN undertakes ring resizing and structural jewellery repairs on-site in our Melbourne workshop, including jewellery that was originally purchased elsewhere.

This is another reason we recommend having an inherited ring assessed before simply putting it into everyday rotation.

Can I Use the Gold or Stones From Dad’s Jewellery to Make Something New?

Potentially, yes – and this can create something extraordinarily personal.

Suitable diamonds and gemstones from inherited jewellery can often be reset into a new piece. Depending on its condition and suitability for the proposed design, existing precious metal may also be incorporated during a jewellery remake.

You might transform a father’s ring into a new ring for yourself.

A diamond could become a pendant.

Several family pieces could contribute to one new design.

An inherited stone might even become part of an engagement ring or wedding ring, allowing one generation of a family to become part of another generation’s milestone.

There is something quite remarkable about that.

The design changes. The sentiment doesn’t.

The Heirlooms We Haven’t Inherited Yet

Another side to this conversation that we don’t talk about as often is: maybe Dad is still wearing the ring.

And hopefully he will be for a very long time.

We tend to think of an heirloom as something old that has already been passed down. But many future heirlooms are sitting on someone’s hand right now.

That wedding ring you have seen your entire life?

One day, somebody may tell its story.

That is why we truly beleive that maintaining and caring for jewellery throughout its lifetime matters.

Regular jeweller inspections can identify worn settings, thinning bands, loose stones, damaged clasps and other problems before they become significantly more serious.

MDT DESIGN offers inspections, repairs, cleaning, polishing and restoration through our on-site Melbourne workshop, including jewellery not originally made by us.

You don’t need to wait until jewellery becomes an heirloom to treat it like one.

Built by a Father. Carried by a Family.

Nicholas Theochari, founder and director of MDT DESIGN, in the Melbourne jewellery boutique.

Perhaps fathers day resonates so deeply with us because MDT DESIGN itself began with a father.

Nicholas Theochari founded what was then called Melbourne Diamond Traders in 1981.

More than four decades later, Nicholas’ legacy MDT DESIGN remains family owned and operated. Nicholas continues to pass on his knowledge and passion for jewellery and the stories they hold that he has accumulated throughout his career, while his eldest son Kosta now leads the business and remains deeply involved in handmaking jewellery, jewellery design, diamond and sapphire selection, consultations and the overlooking each fine piece that enters and exists the jewellery workshop.

Kosta Theochari, jeweller, diamond grader and Co-Director of MDT DESIGN, continuing his family’s legacy of handmade jewellery in Melbourne.

Nicholas’s daughter Ellen and youngest son Steven are also a part of the family business and its direction.

A lot has much has changed since 1981.

The industry has changed.

Technology has evolved.

Trends have changed.

The workshop itself has evolved.

But Nicholas’s principles have remained remarkably simple.

If something is worth making- then it is worth making properly!

Specific to jewellery; this means considering structure, not simply appearance, understanding how a ring wears over time and not just thinking about how beautiful it looks on the day it leaves the boutique.

It also means taking the extra time and consideration necessary, when that extra time creates a better result and refusing to take shortcuts because a faster method exists.

Those ideas have shaped the jewellery created at MDT DESIGN for more than four decades.

And our current family legacy is built around that same belief: traditional handmade jewellery created with patience, intention and integrity, with the goal that it may eventually become part of another family’s story.

But as Nicholas’s children, we also recognise those lessons extend beyond jewellery.

Make things properly.
Look after what you have.
Build things to last.
Leave something worthwhile behind.

From Our Family to Yours

Over more than four decades, thousands of pieces have left the MDT DESIGN workshop.

From Engagement rings, Wedding rings, Men’s rings, Gifts… Pieces individually created to celebrate children, partners, careers and milestones.

Some of the earlies engagement rings and wedding rings created by Nicholas and MDT DESIGN have now lived long enough to become heirlooms themselves.

Beloved clients who once came to the boutique with as children with their parents, have returned years later as adults to create their own jewellery, for their own milestones.

For a jeweller; this really puts the idea of quality into perspective!

We are not simply and solely making something for the person standing in front of us.

We are creating something their children will one day hold.

And when someone brings their father’s worn ring into our boutique and asks whether we can save it, restore it or turn it into something wearable, we are seeing the other side of exactly the same journey.

One family made something worth holding onto…
Another generation decided it was worth conserving.

What Will You Pass Down?

Perhaps you’re looking for something new for Dad this fathers day?

Maybe you have been considering about finally having his old ring restored.

Perhaps there is a piece sitting unworn because you don’t quite know what can be done with it.

Or perhaps the jewellery that will one day mean the most to your family is already being worn.

Whatever stage of that story you’re at, our jewellers can help you understand what is possible – from handmade men’s jewellery and completely custom pieces to repairs, restoration and the remodelling of inherited jewellery.

Because ultimately, an heirloom isn’t defined by its age.

It becomes an heirloom because it was loved by somebody, somebody wore it, and somebody else believed its story was worth continuing.
