Celebrating Tradition and Quality: MDTdesign’s Commitment to Handmade Jewellery

Embracing Tradition in a Fast-Paced World

In today’s fast-paced world, where trends come and go in the blink of an eye, there’s something timeless about the beauty and craftsmanship of handmade jewellery. At MDTdesign, we believe in slowing down and celebrating the things that truly matter – quality, elegance, and enduring classics that are crafted to last a lifetime.

MDTdesign: A Legacy of Excellence

Established in 1981, MDTdesign has been a trailblazer in the jewellery industry, leading the market with our unique jewellery designs while staying true to our core values. We’ve made a solemn vow never to compromise on the quality of our jewellery by taking shortcuts, cutting production costs, or engaging in mass production methods that diminish the integrity of our jewellery.
MDTdesign is a family business, emphasising the ethos that you will be welcomed into the family with the utmost care, consideration and time given to our clients providing them the knowledge necessary to make an educated decision and ultimately the best decision for them.

Crafting Quality Handmade Jewellery, One Piece at a Time

At MDTdesign, we pride ourselves on providing our clients with an entirely handmade jewellery piece. Each piece of jewellery that leaves our workshop is individually crafted using traditional techniques, starting from a solid bar of metal. Our team of expert jewellers meticulously work, forge, and shape the metal by hand, imparting it with unmatched strength and durability. This intensive process ensures that every piece is imbued with a level of quality, attention to detail and craftsmanship that cannot be replicated by the mass-produced or ‘handcrafted’ alternatives that flood today’s market.

Shunning Mass Production for True Artistry in Handmade Jewellery

Unlike many in the industry, we abstain from the use of computer-aided design (CAD), casting, and mass production processes whilst creating our jewellery. We believe that true artistry lies in the hands of skilled jewellers, not in algorithms or automated processes. Each piece of jewellery at MDTdesign is a testament to our years of knowledge, expertise, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Backed by Confidence: Our Lifetime Jewellery Warranty

Furthermore, we back the quality of our handmade jewellery with a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty, standing behind every piece that leaves our Melbourne workshop. This is a testament to our confidence in the durability and longevity of our handmade creations.

The Pitfalls of Mass Production

In contrast, the handcrafted, CAD, casting, and mass production process employed by the majority in the industry leaves much to be desired. Mass-produced jewellery often lacks the strength, durability, and artistry that are hallmarks of handmade jewellery pieces. The lightweight and porous nature of these pieces, coupled with the use of poured metal, result in jewellery that is prone to wear and breakage over a short amount of time.

The difference between Handmade Jewellery Process (what we do) and Mass Produced Alternatives

The Handmade Jewellery Process

Each and every piece of jewellery that is created at MDTdesign is individually made and utilizes traditional methods of handmaking jewellery- meaning that your piece of jewellery will begin as a solid bar of metal.
From there our expert Jewellers work, forge and shape the metal. Through this process the metal compresses immensely giving it incredible strength and hardness that is not able to be replicated with mass produced or ‘handcrafted’ pieces of jewellery. Nothing is we create is cast or computer designed in order to be mass produced.
We use our years of knowledge and expertise to create a superior piece of jewellery, individually handmade to stand the test of time. We believe in the product we create and that is why we back it with a lifetime manufactures warranty.
The Jewellery at MDTdesign is a culmination of a lifetime of research, experimentation, mastery and artistic skill- this quality simply cannot be mass produced!

The Mass Produced Jewellery Process (Why we decide to only create quality Handmade jewellery)

Handcrafted, Computer Aided Design (CAD), casting and mass production process is not a very attractive one. Mass producing jewellery requires a computer program in which the corporation designs your ring and then has it 3D printed in wax. They then collate a number of these wax ring designs onto a tree shaped formation (a casting tree), from which they produce a mould.
Once the mould is finished, they proceed to fill it with metal to create a number of rings simultaneously on the casting tree (pictured above). They would customarily get an apprentice Jeweller to clean the metal and proceed to have your diamond set into this rather weak poured metal.
As you can imagine, opposed to forging and shaping the metal by hand, this mass production technique creates a lightweight, weak and flimsy piece of jewellery that is often porous (filled with air bubbles & air) as the metal has not been compressed or worked in any fashion.

A Legacy of Dedication and Passion for Quality Jewellery in Melbourne.

At MDTdesign, we understand that true quality cannot be rushed or mass-produced. Our jewellery is a culmination of a lifetime of research, experimentation, mastery, and artistic skill. Each piece tells a story of dedication, passion, and uncompromising quality. With our Melbourne Jewellers taking the necessary time to instil strength and durability in each and every facet of our handmade jewellery.
