Flawless Diamonds (FL Clarity)

What Is a Flawless Diamond?

A Flawless (FL) diamond represents the highest clarity grade a diamond can achieve.

In gemmological terms, a Flawless diamond has no internal inclusions and no surface blemishes visible under 10× magnification, even when examined by a trained diamond grader.

Diamonds form deep within the Earth under immense heat and pressure. During their formation, most diamonds develop tiny natural characteristics known as inclusions. These internal features may appear as small crystals, feathers, clouds, or other microscopic formations within the stone.

A Flawless diamond contains none of these internal characteristics, nor any surface marks known as blemishes. Because of this, Flawless diamonds are among the rarest clarity grades found in nature.

How Rare Are Flawless Diamonds?

Flawless diamonds are exceptionally rare.

Only a very small percentage of gem-quality diamonds receive the Flawless clarity grade. The vast majority of diamonds contain at least minor internal characteristics visible under magnification.

Because of this rarity, Flawless diamonds often command a significant premium compared with diamonds in lower clarity grades.

However, rarity alone does not determine a diamond’s beauty. Even a Flawless diamond must still possess excellent cut quality to achieve maximum brilliance and sparkle.

The Diamond Clarity Scale

Diamond clarity is evaluated using the internationally recognised diamond clarity scale, which ranks diamonds according to the visibility of inclusions and blemishes.

The clarity scale includes the following grades:

  • Flawless (FL)
  • Internally Flawless (IF)
  • VVS1, VVS2
  • VS1, VS2
  • SI1, SI2
  • I1, I2, I3

Flawless diamonds sit at the very top of the clarity scale, representing the highest level of purity possible in a natural diamond.

At MDT DESIGN, our standard is always eye-clean, white diamonds. For this reason, we most commonly select diamonds graded SI2 or higher, ensuring exceptional beauty without visible inclusions.

What Makes a Diamond Flawless?

For a diamond to receive the Flawless clarity grade, it must meet very strict criteria when examined under 10× magnification.

A Flawless diamond will show:

no internal inclusions
no surface blemishes
no polishing marks visible under magnification
no natural characteristics within the stone

This level of purity is extremely uncommon in natural diamonds, which is why Flawless diamonds are so highly valued.

Price Premium: Flawless vs VVS Diamonds

Because Flawless diamonds are so rare, they typically carry a noticeable price premium compared with diamonds in the VVS clarity range.

As a general guide:

A Flawless diamond may cost approximately 20–40% more than a VVS diamond of the same size, colour and cut quality.

Despite this price difference, the visual distinction between a VVS diamond and a Flawless diamond is usually impossible to see with the naked eye. The difference becomes visible only under magnification when the diamond is carefully examined.

For many engagement rings, diamonds in the VVS or VS clarity range can offer exceptional beauty while providing a more balanced price.

Should I Buy a Flawless Diamond?

Flawless diamonds represent the pinnacle of diamond clarity, but they are not always necessary for achieving a beautiful diamond.

When choosing a diamond, it is important to consider the balance of the four Cs:

  • Cut
  • Colour
  • Clarity
  • Carat weight

A diamond with exceptional cut quality will often appear more brilliant than a poorly cut diamond with higher clarity.

Many jewellery experts agree that diamonds in the VVS or VS clarity ranges can appear completely clean to the naked eye, making them an excellent choice for many engagement rings.

However, some buyers specifically seek Flawless diamonds for their rarity, prestige and symbolic perfection.

Why Some Buyers Choose Flawless Diamonds

Flawless diamonds are often selected for reasons beyond visual appearance.

Reasons may include:

• exceptional rarity
• collector value
• prestige within high jewellery
• symbolism of purity and perfection
• investment-grade diamonds

For collectors and high jewellery pieces, Flawless diamonds represent the highest level of natural diamond clarity available.

Diamond clarity describes the tiny natural characteristics formed as a diamond develops deep within the earth. While many of these features are microscopic, clarity grading helps explain how visible they are and how they may influence the appearance and value of a diamond.
