Cristiano Ronaldo’s Engagement Ring: Spectacle, Craft, and the “Bigger Is Better?” Question

Celebrity engagement rings have a way of stopping the internet, and Cristiano Ronaldo’s proposal to Georgina Rodríguez did exactly that.

The ring is a classic three-stone composition with a colossal oval centre diamond set into platinum- an sight for sore eyes seemingly engineered to be seen from space.

Estimates for the centre stone range wildly (low-20s up to -50 carats) with valuations from roughly US$2-5M and some even higher; all figures remain third-party estimates based on photos and there have been no lab reports to speak of at this point in time.

Cristiano Ronaldo Engagement Ring
What we actually know (and what we don’t)

Design: A three-stone platinum ring with an oval centre flanked by two smaller ovals- generally a timeless architectural design, in the case of this particular trilogy design- minimal metal, maximum diamond.

Carat/price chatter: Some experts in the press estimate -25–37+ carats for the centre with total values being estimated in the US$2–5M range (and a few speculative higher). No official grading report has been released publicly.

Maker: As of now, no jeweller has publicly claimed this ring; while some speculation mentions heritage houses, nothing has been confirmed. In short: no verified information on who made it and whether it’s entirely handmade or workshop-produced. We would hope a ring with a stone this size would be entirely handmade- as it needs to be very secure.

When it comes to celebrity engagement rings, it’s common for “facts” to be inferred from images. As jewellers, we rely on documentation (e.g., GIA reports) and bench-level inspection; in this case, neither has been shared, so all 4Cs beyond cut shape (oval) remain unconfirmed.

A jeweller’s lens: proportion, wearability, engineering

At MDT DESIGN, we love diamonds more than the next person-but we love good design even more. The question we ask with stones this colossal is simple: can the ring still be a design, or does it become only a diamond?

  • Proportion to the hand: A 25–40+ carat oval spans significant finger real estate. The larger the stone, the less visual “breathing room” for elements like the shoulders or the diamond setting work to shine. The stone becomes the design. That’s a valid choice when your budget is seemingly limitless-but it limits creative expression.
  • Setting security: With serious carat weight, the use of platinum is wise for strength, but prong geometry, bearing depth, and under-structure must be engineered to absolute perfection. We would expect reinforced shoulders and a robust, balanced shank to counteract top-heaviness. (Press photos alone can’t confirm these details.)
  • Daily wear vs. spectacle: There’s a growing cultural conversation that some celebrity engagement rings are edging into “too big to live with.” The question isn’t taste; it’s practicality: snagging, knocking, travel, insurability, and comfort.
  • Parenting practicality: For someone with small children, a ring of this scale could be entirely impractical. Changing nappies, bathing a baby, holding a child, playing on the floor-sharp claws, high profiles, and large surface areas all pose risks both to the ring and the child. In reality, a piece of this magnitude would likely spend more time in a safe than on the hand.

Is “bigger is better”… always?

We hear it often: “bigger is better.” But is it-for you?
From our bench, bigger can be extraordinary; It can be an instant crowd-pleaser, but sometimes size takes the spotlight away from the finer details that make a ring truly special.

Consider:

  1. Design integrity: With extreme size, fine setting details often recede. If you love sculptural shoulders, architectural shanks, or precision claw work, those elements need space to shine.
  2. Finger mechanics: Stability matters. Rings with elevated stones, especially elongated shapes like ovals, require careful engineering to stay centred and secure, so that it wont constantly twist and spin.
  3. Lifestyle: If you’re hands-on at work, an active parent, or constantly on the move, height and spread change how the ring lives on your hand.
  4. Long-term serviceability: Ultra-large stones demand meticulous routine checks-especially prongs and setting integrity.

So we’ll pose the question back to you: Is the goal the biggest possible diamond-or the most beautiful ring for your hand, your life, and your story?

That’s where truly great design lives, and it’s where celebrity engagement rings can sometimes blur the line between a personal moment and public spectacle.

The 4Cs (and the missing “C”: context)

  • Carat: The headline, undeniably. Public estimates vary widely because photography distorts scale and finger sizes differ.
  • Colour & Clarity: Online punditry tends to assume D/IF at this level, but without a grading report, it’s just people speculating. No official colour/clarity has been reported.
  • Cut: Oval-chosen for finger-lengthening optics. A well-cut oval avoids excessive bow-tie and optimises light return; again, impossible to judge without diamond-in-hand or report imagery.
  • Context: The “why” behind the ring. For many celebrity engagement rings, impact is part of the brief; a monumental oval in platinum does that job perfectly.

Who made it? Handmade or mass-produced?

As of publication, no jeweller has confirmed authorship and no house has gone on record. Consequently, there’s no verified statement that it’s entirely handmade, atelier-made, or produced across multiple workshops-common in the high jewellery world for pieces of this scale.

 The Necessity of Jewellery Insurance

Owning a piece of jewellery valued in the millions is as much a responsibility as it is a joy. At MDT DESIGN, we recommend that all fine jewellery-whether it’s a family heirloom or a brand-new commission-be professionally valued and fully insured.

With celebrity engagement rings of this magnitude, insurance isn’t optional; it’s essential. This protects you against loss, theft, accidental damage, and, in some cases, mysterious disappearance.

For context, premiums for a ring valued at US$3–5 million could range anywhere from tens of thousands to well over a hundred thousand dollars annually, depending on the insurer, coverage type, and security measures in place. Some insurers may even require that a piece of this value be kept in a secure vault when not in use, and worn only under certain conditions.

We advise annual re-valuations to keep your cover up to date, as market fluctuations can dramatically impact replacement cost. Without correct insurance, replacing a ring of this calibre would be virtually impossible.

At MDT DESIGN, we not only craft heirloom-quality jewellery, we also assist clients in connecting with specialist insurers who understand the unique needs of high-value pieces-ensuring your investment is protected for a lifetime (and beyond).

Our verdict-through MDT DESIGN’s ethos

We craft every MDT DESIGN piece by hand in our Collins Street workshop because we believe jewellery should be engineered for beauty and for life. Ronaldo and Rodríguez’s ring is a breathtaking feat of scale-a deliberate, media-savvy statement within the universe of celebrity engagement rings. But jewellery isn’t only about wattage; it’s about fit, function, and feeling.

So we’ll ask you-the person who’ll actually wear the ring:

  • Do you want the largest diamond, or the most flattering design for your hand?
  • Will you enjoy this every day, or is it a showpiece for select moments?
  • If you love the look, would a scaled, perfectly proportioned version serve you better-preserving drama, adding nuance, and elevating comfort?

There’s no wrong answer-only the right jewel for you.
