VVS1 vs VVS2 Diamonds
VVS1 vs VVS2 Diamonds
VVS diamonds sit among the highest clarity grades on the diamond clarity scale. The term VVS stands for Very Very Slightly Included, meaning the diamond contains extremely small inclusions that are very difficult to detect even under magnification.
Within this category there are two grades: VVS1 and VVS2.
Both are considered exceptionally clean diamonds and will appear completely flawless to the naked eye. The difference between them is subtle and typically only visible to trained graders using magnification.
What Is a VVS1 Diamond?
A VVS1 diamond contains extremely tiny inclusions that are very difficult for a professional grader to see under 10× magnification.
These inclusions are usually positioned in areas of the diamond where they are harder to detect, such as near the edges or beneath facets.
Because of this, VVS1 diamonds are considered slightly higher in clarity than VVS2 diamonds.
However, the difference is microscopic.
What Is a VVS2 Diamond?
A VVS2 diamond also contains extremely small inclusions that are very difficult to detect under magnification.
The difference is that these inclusions are slightly easier for a grader to locate using a loupe or microscope, compared with VVS1 diamonds.
Despite this technical difference, VVS2 diamonds remain exceptionally clean and visually indistinguishable from VVS1 stones when viewed normally.
Can You See the Difference?
In practical terms, no visible difference exists between VVS1 and VVS2 diamonds without magnification.
Both grades appear perfectly clean to the naked eye and deliver exceptional brilliance.
Even many professional jewellers cannot distinguish between VVS1 and VVS2 diamonds without magnification tools.
Should You Choose VVS1 or VVS2?
For most buyers, the choice between VVS1 and VVS2 comes down to rarity and price rather than visible beauty.
Because VVS1 diamonds are slightly rarer, they often carry a higher price premium.
Many buyers choose VVS2 diamonds, which can offer nearly identical purity while representing better overall value.
The MDT DESIGN Perspective
At MDT DESIGN, we focus on selecting diamonds that deliver exceptional visual beauty rather than simply chasing the highest clarity grade.
While VVS diamonds are extremely pure, the difference between VVS and slightly lower grades such as VS1 or VS2 is rarely visible once the diamond is set in jewellery.
For this reason, many of our clients achieve excellent results with carefully selected VS diamonds, which often provide a better balance between beauty and value.
